Tom Coughlin keeps taking the punches

November 25th, 2008

It was less than two years ago, that both fans and media wanted to run Tom Coughlin out of town. Not only did they attack his head coaching skills, they attacked him as a person as well. We heard cries of, “the Giants will never win with Coughlin in charge”. Another popular one was, “ He’s inflexible. He doesn’t relate well to his players. He’s grumpy. He’s not a nice guy”. The criticism was never ending.

But guess what? Tom Coughlin kept taking the punches. He never once ducked. Yes he tweaked himself a bit. He improved his relationships with his players and with members of the media. But he never compromised his beliefs. He came to the Giants in 2004 with a promise to restore pride and dignity to the organization. He didn’t make the playoffs in his first year. But he’s made it in every year since, culminating or course, with last year’s thrilling Super Bowl victory.

This season the Giants record is currently 10-1. Best in the conference. And when they clinch their playoff berth this season,  it will mark the first time in the proud history of the franchise, that the Giants will have made it into the post-season for a fourth consecutive year!

Why are the Giants so good now? It’s a simple philosophy. A philosophy that Tom Coughlin has never wavered from. And in this day and age of the selfish mega millionaire athletes, Coughlin has all his men thinking unselfishly of the team first.

Does Tom Coughlin gloat about his success? No. Does Tom Coughlin attack all those who attacked him? No. You see, Tom Coughlin is extremely comfortable in his own skin. He knows who he is and what he’s accomplished. That’s good enough for him. As for those who attacked and are now lining up to kiss his rear end, you had better hurry up. The line keeps getting longer and longer.

There has been a metamorphosis in thought and action at the Meadowlands with the New York Football Giants. Tom Coughlin realized that his tough and rough demeanor was not providing the proper environment for success and he altered his coaching technique. The fire to win is still there, but the manner in which to relate to the players and get the best out of them has changed. A coach must be diverse enough in his thoughts and beliefs to recognize what motivates a player or a group of players and weave that into his program. Those who can recognize this succeed. Tom Coughlin has done just this. Yes, Tom has a very talented roster, but his guidance and direction have provided the added ingredient for the defending Super Bowl Champions. Born in the Finger Lakes, schooled at Syracuse University, Tom Coughlin is a New York success story that could become legend if he adds another Lombardi Trophy on the mantel in East Rutherford,New Jersey.
